Export Declaration Number is Important for Duty Drawback Scheme

Every exporter must obtain an export declaration number (EDN) from the Australian Customs as it must be mentioned on the export documents to be sent along export consignments. For this, the exporters need to file export declaration with the Customs, providing required details about the goods being exported. Another benefit of EDN is its use in duty drawback scheme.

So, what is duty drawback scheme? It is one of the many schemes provided to the Australian exporters. It makes exporters eligible to receive refunds on custom duties they pay on imported goods. The refund is applicable if the goods in question are:
  • Processed or treated or incorporated into other goods before further exportation or
  • Lying unused since the time they were imported and are now being exported from Australia
If you are planning to export such goods from Australia, you must obtain an EDN, just like you would while exporting other goods. In addition, there are other requirements to lodge a claim for duty drawback:
  • Registered Australian Business Number or a Customs Client Identifier
  • Bank details
What Makes You Eligible?

To be eligible for duty drawback, you must:

  • Export the good from Australia
  • Legally own the goods when they are exported
  • Produce documents confirming payment of import duty on the goods
Which Goods Are Not Eligible?

You can’t make a claim for goods that:

  • Have been in use in Australia for purposes other than processing, treatment, exhibition etc.
  • Have values less than 25% of the imported customs value at the time of exportation
  • Have already been claimed for import duty refunds
What Else to Know?
  • You can claim minimum of AUD 100 per duty drawback application
  • For all goods exported after October, 2006, claims for duty drawback can be filed within 4 years from the date of exportation
  • The Integrated Cargo System can be used for filing the duty drawback claim electronically.
If you use an export documentation software, chances are that it offers assistance in this direction. You can anyway use the software to obtain the EDN.
